Lowitja Institute

The Lowitja Institute is Australia’s national institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research, named in honor of their Patron, Dr. Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE DSG. This project involved the commercial fit-out for the Lowitja Institute, emphasizing a connection to Country and prioritising functionality over mere aesthetics.

The design strategy aimed to create an office that didn’t feel like an office, adopting a narrative rather than a figurative approach. It focused on the spatial qualities of key areas to reflect their importance to the organization. As a national health research institute, the spaces were conceptually divided to express distinct themes: “fertile thinking” in the publications corner, “collaborative exchange” in the kitchen, “imaginative energy” in the core workspace, and the “flow of ideas” in the conference area.

This thematic division allowed for a thoughtful use of color to reference the landscape and Country, reinforcing the importance of place to Aboriginal Australia. The design’s narrative approach ensured that each area was tailored to support the specific activities and interactions that would occur within it, creating a cohesive environment that nurtures creativity, collaboration, and innovation.

By focusing on what happens within the space, the design promotes a sense of belonging and connection to Country, making it a unique and effective workspace for the Lowitja Institute. This project not only provides a functional office space but also serves as a cultural symbol, reflecting the values and mission of the Lowitja Institute in advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research.
