Majlis, Australian Pavilion

Dubai World Expo 2020

The Majlis at the Australian Pavilion for Dubai Expo 2021 was a unique interior experience that creatively wove together the visual and cultural identities of Indigenous Australian and Emirati cultures. Inspired by the shared traditions of the majlis and the Aboriginal yarning circle—both central to storytelling, knowledge exchange, and community gathering—the space welcomed dignitaries and guests throughout the exposition.

This project aimed to elevate local cultural heritage on a global stage, highlighting the deep connections between the two cultures while celebrating contemporary Emirati and Australian art and design practices.

Design Approach

The design was guided by four key pillars:

A Gathering Place – The space was designed as an intimate, inviting environment centered around a reimagined fire pit, symbolising connection, dialogue, and shared wisdom.

Cultural Motifs – A delicate interplay of Indigenous and Emirati artistic expressions was embedded into the space, with intricate filigree patterns incorporated into lighting, soft furnishings, and wallpaper.

Contemporary Expression – The installation showcased specially commissioned works from Aboriginal and Emirati artists, creating a visual dialogue between the two traditions.

Knowledge Exchange – In the dynamic Expo setting, the Majlis provided a calm retreat for reflection and conversation, reinforcing its role as a bridge between cultures.

Through its thoughtful fusion of design, art, and storytelling, the Majlis was more than an interior space—it was a testament to the power of cultural exchange and the enduring traditions that continue to shape contemporary identities.
