UniSA Aboriginal Knowledges Centre
Greenaway Architects is proud to be part of the UniSA Aboriginal Knowledges Centre Project, which aims to celebrate the rich heritage of the Kaurna people and their Country. Our vision aligns with the project’s goal of reimagining cultural engagement, emphasizing Aboriginal agency, sovereignty, and self-determination. We understand the importance of creating an authentic experience deeply rooted in Country, fostering opportunities for cultural exchange, dance, and knowledge sharing.
Central to our approach is the recognition of community voices and the establishment of trust and shared values. Our aim is to create a gathering place that connects people across generations, enabling meaningful engagement with history and culture.
Furthermore, our design aims to empower the community by providing employment and educational opportunities while celebrating dance and cultural expression in innovative ways. We envision the Centre as an international exemplar of dance, culture, and learning.
Our project scope includes the establishment of both internal and external yarning spaces. Internally, we will create a multifunctional gathering space, complete with a yarning circle, capable of subdivision with an operable wall. This space will also feature a foyer, kitchen, and an Aboriginal archive nook for virtual access to archival materials.
Externally, we will develop a courtyard into an external yarning circle, featuring a fire pit, Aboriginal art, and native landscaping. This redevelopment will involve removing certain heritage-listed brick walls to enhance visibility and connectivity with George Street. Additionally, we will incorporate a new lift and fire stair to address building access requirements.
Collaborating with Swanbury Penglase, we have developed a deep understanding of the site, ensuring that our design respects its heritage while meeting the needs of the project.
Together with the project team, we are excited to contribute to the realisation of the UniSA Aboriginal Knowledges Centre, a place where the past, present, and future of the Kaurna people can be celebrated and shared with the broader community.
